Die moderne Gesellschaft existiert heute nur noch im Singular. Es gibt nur noch eine einzige, heterarchisch vernetzte und funktional differenzierte Weltgesellschaft, die sich überall in posttraditionalen Verständigungsverhältnissen einrichten und ihre Probleme durch adaptives Lernen lösen muss. Gleichzeitig pluralisiert sich die Gesellschaft nicht nur in eine Vielzahl von Staaten und oft hochorganisierten Weltregionen (wie der EU), sondern auch in eine ständig wachsende Vielzahl von Rechtsordnungen, Religionen, Kulturen, Lebensformen, die schon lange nicht mehr mit den porös gewordenen Staatsgrenzen identisch sind.


Modern society today only exists in the singular, that is, there is only one heterarchically networked and functionally governed global society which has to adopt post-traditional relationships of understanding and solve its problems through adaptive learning. At the same time, however, society is becoming more pluralised due to both the multitude of states and often highly organised areas of the world, such as the EU, and the constantly growing number of legal systems, religions, cultures and ways of life which have not been compatible with countries’ increasingly porous national borders for a long time.
