Bernard Bolzano's theory of ground and consequence did not receive the attention it deserved in Bolzano research for a long time. Interest in this doctrine, which is fundamental to Bolzano's philosophy, arose in connection with the scientific-theoretical question of an appropriate definition of the concept of a scientific explanation, in connection with problems of modern proof theory, but also through the problem of grounding, which is intensively discussed today in the context of analytic ontology.

Bernard Bolzanos Theorie von Grund und Folge fand in der Bolzano-Forschung lange nicht die ihr gebührende Beachtung. Das Interesse an dieser für Bolzanos Philosophie grundlegenden Lehre erwachte im Zusammenhang mit der wissenschaftstheoretischen Frage nach einer angemessenen Definition des Begriffs einer wissenschaftlichen Erklärung, im Zusammenhang mit Problemen der modernen Beweistheorie, aber auch durch die heute im Rahmen der analytischen Ontologie intensiv diskutierte Problematik des Grounding.
