The study reveals that this history has two distinct phases: a first phase in which artist novels were focussed on the personal predicaments of their protagonists but rarely described the paintings, writings, or compositions these artist figures produced, and a second phase that reverses this genre tradition. In the 1940s, authors like Nabokov and Mann re-invented the artist novel by giving detailed descriptions of imaginary oeuvres and letting the subject of the artist vanish behind the work.
Wie stellt die erzählende Literatur das Schaffen fiktiver Künstler dar? Aus dieser Frage entwickelt die Studie ein grundsätzlich neues Verständnis der internationalen Geschichte des Künstlerromans von seinen Anfängen im späten 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart. Das Erzählen über fiktive Künstler lässt sich demnach in zwei Phasen teilen, die jeweils bestimmte historische Ursachen haben: eine erste Phase, die sich auf die persönlichen Konflikte malender, dichtender und komponierender Hauptfiguren konzentriert, und eine zweite, in den 1940er Jahren einsetzende Phase, in der Autoren wie Vladimir Nabokov und Thomas Mann den Fokus von den Künstlersubjekten auf Imaginationen ihrer Kunstobjekte verlagern und den Künstlerroman nachhaltig verwandeln.
