englischKarl-Heinz Ladeur’s work describes the transformation of modern society from a ‘society of individuals’ into a ‘society of organisations’ and finally into a ‘society of networks’. Basing his analysis on this finding, Ladeur also rethinks the modern state. From an external perspective, the state now forms a node in a global network that is more than the sum of its parts. Internally, i.e. in relation to the networks on the national level, the state now functions only as a ‘type of unit’. It can no longer encompass and control the networks. Instead, its task is to moderate the irreducible diversity of those networks and their interplay.
