englischThe implementation of a board (‘Beirat’) can be freely modeled by the shareholders of a family enterprise. As they define all rules concerning the structure of the board, a large variety of constructs exists. This study delineates the regulatory structure of 34 family enterprises with regard to their rules of the boards’ implementation. Based on more than 40 individual criteria, the results of the analysis are shown and discussed. The main conclusions are then reviewed with four professionals via expert interviews to gain an even deeper understanding of the practical principles of optional supervisory or advisory boards in family enterprises. Due to this approach, the study is relevant for both academic scholars and practitioners.
