englischThis study analyses four Scottish novels on the Highland Clearances from the point of view of trauma theory. The Clearances, carried out in the Scottish Highlands approximately 200 years ago, and the feelings of betrayal that stemmed from them often resulted in the victims being traumatised. This study theoretically proves that a capacity to process this trauma can be identified within the novels. Thus, this book will be of interest to readers with a research focus on literary and cultural studies (among others). In his analysis, Ebest also adopts approaches from postcolonialism and historiography. In addition, modes of thought stemming from the fields of trauma/memory, nationalism and conflict research are employed.
Diese Studie analysiert vier schottische Highland-Clearances-Romane aus der Sicht der Trauma-Theorie. Die vor ca. 200 Jahren durchgeführten Vertreibungen (Clearances) im schottischen Hochland und der mit ihnen verbundene Verrat führten oft zu einer Traumatisierung der Opfer. Die Studie, die u. a. für Leser aus dem Bereich der Kultur- und Literaturwissenschaften von Interesse sein dürfte, weist theoretisch nach, dass das Trauma mit den Romantexten integriert werden kann. Zur Untersuchung werden auch postkoloniale und historiographische Ansätze verwendet. Des Weiteren nutzt der Autor Denkmodelle aus den Gebieten Trauma/Gedächtnis sowie Nationalismus und Konfliktforschung. Mario Ebest arbeitet als Hochschullehrer in Hessen und Bayern. Seine Forschung fokussiert u. a. auf die Entstehung und Verarbeitung von kulturellen Traumata, interne Kolonien sowie die kulturelle Konstruierung von nationalen Identitäten.
