The integration of the emerging market economies in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union into an increasingly globalized world economy is of major concern to the western industrialized countries and to the international economic organizations, which have been supporting adjustment and restructuring processes in these countries since the political turnaround in 1989/1990. The present Volume 16 of the Edition Dräger Foundation Future offers complex analyses upon the evaluation of these adjustment strategies in the context of current trends towards globalized markets for capital, goods, and services, as well as upon lessons learned for future assistance for economies in transitions.
Speakers from transition countries as well as from the western community, from the international economic organizations, from politics, business, and academia reflect the different approaches to the subject showing unequivocally that there is still no clear end in sight to the process of transition, and that there is no obvious path which would lead directly and safely to a market economy and to a free and democratic system.
