englischUniversalist concepts of order are amongst the most powerful ideas in world history. Their power is due to the claim that universalist principles are true for the whole of humankind. The world order established after the end of the Cold War seemed to come ever closer to the ideals of a type of universalism based on the traditions of Western Enlightenment. However, universalist movements also tend to provoke strong reactional forces. In recent years, Western universalism has increasingly been challenged from both outside and within Western societies. This volume analyses both the formation and specific shape of universalist phenomena from a long-term perspective, as well as the challenges they face. It covers developments and phenomena from late antiquity to recent contemporary history, including examples from Russia and the Islamic world.
