englischThe European enlargement process raises the question of how belonging to Europe can be constituted. Against the background of cultural-religious debate, which increasingly characterises Islam as incompatible with Europe, and as a result of the fact that if Bosnia and Herzegovina was allowed to join the EU, a state with a majority Muslim population would be admitted, the suitability of this region’s accession to Europe is debatable.

The author explores the relationship between “Europeanisation and Islam” with the help of religious-political networks and the identity discourses of Bosnian Muslims. Moreover, he devotes particular attention to anti-Muslim discourses which decidedly reject the idea that Bosnian Muslims belong to Europe.

This book recently won the 2015 Fritz and Helga Exner Foundation Award and the 2015 Cultural Sciences Dissertation Prize.
