englischBy deciding for or against the continuation of a fixed-term employment relationship, the employer exercises his freedom of contract. However, this freedom is not unrestricted. The thesis examines how free the employer is in deciding whether to continue fixed-term employment relationships and explores the protection of fixed-term employees in the continuation situation. It deals with protection of employment, self-commitment, equal treatment, prohibitions of discrimination and the position of works council members in the continuation situation. In terms of collective labour law, the works council's possibilities of influencing the continuation decision are analyzed.
