englischThe municipalities in multi-layered systems are facing increasing problems due to the decay of representative democracy as well as the impact of the financial and economic crisis, and the ongoing Europeanization processes.

The book examines three areas: inter-municipal co-operation in multi-layered systems (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Romania, and Scandinavia), the role of municipalities in Europeanization processes and the municipality as an actor in selected policy fields.

Attention is also devoted to the municipality as a member of the legal instrument EGTC of the European Union and to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.

The book is intended to be of interest to scholars, civil servants and students who wish to get an overview of the recent developments as to the role of municipalities in multi-layered systems. The authors of the articles are well-known experts from both science and practice.

»bietet der Band einen breiten Überblick über die verschiedenen Herausforderungen, mit denen die Kommunen konfrontiert sind.«
