englischIn this book, the author outlines the political, social, economic and cultural determinants and lines of development of Icelandic history in the context of Europe and the common heritage of Iceland and Europe. He traces the mutual interests of Iceland and the EU in addressing new political and economic challenges in the age of globalisation through topics such as foreign and security policy in the North Atlantic and the Arctic, and the 2009 financial and economic crisis. This study sheds light on the intra-Icelandic and European debate on national and cultural identity, political autonomy and state sovereignty in the context of the EU’s enlargement, deepening and identity.
Der Autor skizziert die politischen, sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Determinanten und Entwicklungslinien isländischer Geschichte im europäischen Kontext und das gemeinsame Erbe Islands und Europas. Er weist anhand verschiedener Themenfelder, bspw. der Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik im Nordatlantik und der Arktis, der Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise 2009, die gemeinsamen Interessen Islands und der EU zur Bewältigung neuer politischer und wirtschaftlichen Herausforderungen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung nach. Die Studie bringt Licht in die innerisländische und europäische Debatte über nationale und kulturelle Identität, politische Autonomie und staatliche Souveränität im Spannungsfeld der Erweiterung, Vertiefung und Identität der EU.
