englischUnmanned aircraft systems, so-called "unmanned aerial vehicles" (UAVs), have so far been used primarily in military contexts. That is why academic legal literature has dealt with robotic systems that are colloquially referred to as "drones" mostly in the context of public international law. In the last few years, however, smaller drones have been increasingly used by private persons.

Criminal law issues have been largely ignored in both the military and the civilian literature. The author’s aim in this dissertation is to examine criminal law issues arising from the use of combat and surveillance drones.

This dissertation consists of three parts: The first part is dedicated to the conceptual and technical foundations of the subject; in the second part, problem areas of drone deployment in a military context are dealt with from a criminal law perspective. Finally, in the third part, the author analyses criminal issues which emerge from the civilian use of surveillance drones.
