englischBased on a discussion of theoretical models, this study argues that cruising around for a parking space can be prevented and that the efficient allocation of kerbside parking spaces can be realised if municipalities charge parking fees. The author also analyses the influence of residential parking according to the “Trenn-” (parking in a designated area is reserved for residents only) and “Mischprinzip” (both residents and non-residents may park in a designated area). It becomes clear that the efficient allocation of kerbside parking spaces is not necessarily viewed as acceptable by all car drivers who need a parking space in mixed-use urban areas. Furthermore, this study shows that the residents of these urban areas who want to maintain the vitality of their neighbourhood not only consider what they expect to gain from residential parking in the form of reduced parking costs when deciding on its scope, but also what they expect to lose in terms of a possible decline in vitality. Often, however, they vote for a larger amount of residential parking than a social planner would decide on.
