englischThe conference volume presents a cross-disciplinary dialogue with contributions in German, Portuguese, Spanish, and English, all concerning the question how to make legal language easier to understand for non-lawyers. The volume focuses on textual and visual strategies for comprehensible legal language (verständliche Rechtssprache), which is not necessarily identical with plain language in general. It explores the perspective of practicing lawyers and translators of legal texts, as well as approaches to greater comprehensibility of law in the Roman Empire, in the 17th century, and during the first German women’s movement in the 19th century. The inside view of lawyers is contrasted by an external viewpoint provided by the findings of legal linguistics and by a through scrutiny of the notion of vulnerability. The volume does not only include a subject index and a summary of the ongoing discussions during the conference, but also a Rapport de Synthèse of Peter-Christian Müller-Graff.
