A comparative reconstruction of the reconstruction of different sociological approaches to World Society is looked into. Conceptualizations of World Society are represented as central components of the changing perspectives of the sociological discipline pointing towards a Global Shift.

Erkenntnisinteresse ist die notwendige Reflexion der Soziologie, welche sich angesichts zeitgenössischer Entwicklungen an einem neuen globalen sozialen Referenzrahmen orientieren muss.
Die Autorin geht hierbei auf die Definition und Verwendung von Begriffen ein – so etwa auf den für die Soziologie zentralen Terminus der Gesellschaft – und auf die Variation von Begriffsinhalten, wie der Internationalen Gesellschaft, der Transnationalen Gesellschaft, der Globalen Gesellschaft sowie der Begrifflichkeit von Weltgesellschaft selbst.
Eine vergleichende Rekonstruktion der Rekonstruktion differenter soziologischer Ansätze zu Weltgesellschaft wird erarbeitet. Konzeptualisierungen von Weltgesellschaft werden als wesentliche Bausteine des Perspektivenwechsels der soziologischen Disziplin hin zu einem Global Shift dargestellt.
Es geht darum, »Weltgesellschaft« als Kontext und auch als wesentliche Herausforderung der Soziologie im 21. Jahrhundert zu begreifen.
