Das Internet als hybrider Kommunikationsraum hat neue Formen von Öffentlichkeit entstehen lassen, die für die klassische, gemeinwohlorientierte Massenkommunikation eine große Herausforderung darstellen. Im Zentrum des Bandes steht die Frage, wie sich die aktuellen medienpolitischen und medienökonomischen Veränderungen auf die Gemeinwohlorientierung der Medien auswirken.
Die Beiträge nähern sich dem Thema sowohl aus medienpolitischer als auch aus medienökonomischer Perspektive. Dabei kommen Fragen der Bewertung von Gemeinwohlaspekten in unterschiedlichen Mediengattungen ebenso zur Sprache wie die Konsequenzen der Digitalisierung für den öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk. Der Band greift die Diskussionen um den so genannten Public Value auf, erweitert diese um bislang vernachlässigte Themen und bietet einen guten Überblick die Gemeinwohlorientierung der Massenmedien in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz.
