Storage facilities can make an important contribution to the success of the energy transition. Pumped storage power plants are a tried-and-tested, reliable storage technology with very high efficiency levels. However, their construction and operation usually involve considerable interference with nature and the landscape. There are therefore considerations to build and operate pumped storage power plants underground in former mines in the future. At the same time, this would be a sensible reuse option for depleted mines. But: what approval law applies to such new types of underground power plants in a mine?
