Focusing on Babylon Berlin, the contribu-tions explore the question of how ›society‹, ›culture‹, ›history‹ and ›reality‹ are constructed by the series and modelled aesthetically and narratively from a media and cultural studies perspective. Which systems of norms and values are created in the series, which problem constellations and solutions are negotiated, and which cinematic presentation strategies come into play? The project investigates and evaluates the series’ dazzling and multifaceted, but by no means unproblematic, retrospective depiction of the Weimar Republic.

Der erste Band zur medienreflexiven Moderne gibt einen Einblick in Dimensionen und Funktionspotenziale einer Retrospektive auf die 1920er-Jahre. Mit dem Schwerpunkt Babylon Berlin gehen die Beiträge aus einer medienkulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive der Frage nach, wie ›Gesellschaft‹, ›Kultur‹, ›Geschichte‹ und ›Realität‹ medial konstruiert und ästhetisch wie narrativ modelliert werden. Welche Normen- und Wertesysteme sind in der Serie angelegt, welche Problemkonstellationen und -lösungen werden ausgehandelt, welche filmischen Präsentationsstrategien kommen zum Tragen? Ermittelt und ausgewertet wird dabei das schillernde und facettenreiche, jedoch mitnichten unproblematische retrospektive Bild auf die Weimarer Republik.
