englischRaue Rhythmen is the first study to present Hölderlin’s Nachtgesänge, the last of the texts he published during his lifetime, as a coherent cycle. The concept of rhythm makes it possible to trace Hölderlin’s historical signature on the path of modernity and to emphasise the special position of his poetry in comparison to Schiller and Goethe. The study is aimed at literary scholars, philosophers and historians, as well as all readers of Hölderlin, and its perspective, which, in addition to Hölderlin, addresses Hesiod, Horace, Ovid, Klopstock and Rousseau, among others, is in keeping with the author’s training in comparative literature, who advocates a theory-driven approach to general and comparative literature.
