englisch It is a slow process of an awakening consciousness of the German colonies. Even less is known about the German colonial cinema in spite of it being the (medial) source of nationalism and racism. Using two examples, the work is analysing how “the others“ are created by hierarchy. The attention lies on the construction of characters as ideological screens. Special consideration is given to the female black body as a contrast to the “German hero“. Furthermore, the author establishes the correlation between film industry and feminism as a catalyst for a growing German nationalism.

The work connects Said’s othering, Mulvey’s gaze and Balazs´ normality of the white body in context of the historical development to a multidisciplinary work and provides background information to the latest debate.
