englischDuring 403–399 a fierce political contest was going on between the king of Sparta Pausanias and Lysander, in which Athens was part of the stakes. I examine the possibility that Socrates became entangled in the backlash of this contest. As Xenophon testifies in Memorabilia, during the trial Socrates was accused of driving his young followers to violence by his polemics against the Athenian democratic institutions. The rekindling of civic unrest in Athens could weaken Pausanias’ position in Sparta, jeopardizing the democratic restoration that he had promoted in Athens in 403.

With a preface by Prof. Livio Rossetti.
