englischThroughout history, Western philosophical thought has focused on questions of ethics and politics on the one hand. On the other hand, it has pursued rational inquiry with the aim of scientific progress.

On this second front, historical-philosophical research, supported by philology, aims to elucidate the concept of philosophy as science in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In this sense, the history of philosophy in Antiquity and the Middle Ages contributes significantly to defining the movement of ideas, methods and the object of rational knowledge. The present volume aims to contribute to this strand of the history of Western thought, which has led to modern Europe, characterised by its knowledge and values.
