englischDue to the commercialization and the continuously increasing number of participants sport has become an important part of national economie. As a result the traditional german sport clubs and federations face a changed environmnet and meet the demand for a more professional management. At the same time common knowledge about the work of full time managers of sport clubs or federations is rather poor. What do their activities look like, what qualifications do they have, in which way were they recruited? Are there differences between the managers of sport clubs and managers of sport federations? To answer these questions, 47 managers, sport directors and general secretaries on the one hand and their honorary superiors on the other hand were interviewed. The range of organisations in question reach from mass sports orientied sport clubs and and professional sport clubs to regional and national sport federations. In addition job advertisements are analysed. The empirical material is dealt with on the base of results from the 'work-activity-school' and the management roles being defined by management researcher Mintzberg. The analysis of activity, qualification and recruitment leads to statements about the actual extent and chances of professionalization in the field of sport management. Finally the book draws conclusions for the training of managers for sport clubs and federations. The book addresses lecturers and students from institutions dealing with training and qualification of managers for sport clubs and federations and may also be of interest for those managers who are already working in sport organizations.
