It traces the history of racial segregation in sports – particularly concerning athletics, rugby and football - and focuses on the increasing national and international resistance against this system of inequality.
The focus is on the investigation of transnational protests using the example of governments, newspapers, sports associations and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany and the former GDR. The role of international organisations, in particular the IOC and the United Nations, in the fight against apartheid is also presented.
Erstmals erhält der interessierte Leser einen umfassenden Einblick in die Merkmale und die Wirkungen sportbezogener, nationaler wie transnationaler Proteste gegen die Apartheid.
Die vorliegende Studie zeichnet die Geschichte der Rassentrennung im Bereich des Sports – vor allem mit Blick auf die Leichtathletik, Rugby und Fußball – nach und richtet den Fokus auf den sich zunehmend formierenden nationalen und internationalen Widerstand gegen dieses System der Ungleichheit.
Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Untersuchung transnationalen Protests am Beispiel von Regierungen, Zeitungen, Sportverbänden und der Anti-Apartheid-Bewegung in Südafrika, dem Vereinigten Königreich, der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der ehemaligen DDR. Auch die Rolle internationaler Akteure, insbesondere des IOC und der Vereinten Nationen, im Kampf gegen die Apartheid wird dargestellt.
