englischConrad Ekhof (1720–1778) is known for establishing the realistic style of acting in German theatre–like Garrick in Britain–, turning strolling troupes into state theatres, and transforming jesters who lived at the fringes of society into distinguished artists and respected citizens. The present volume collects for the first time all that has survived of Ekhof’s letters, speeches and writings, transcribed from the original manuscripts wherever possible. Additional source material about Ekhof completes the volume. Many of the documents are published here for the first time, and all of them are fully explained. An indispensable collection for anyone interested in German theatre and the 18th century.
