It becomes clear how the respective objectives of shaping the world emerge from the purposeful use of its central figures of thought. Illustrative example analyses and (re)interpretation processes of concepts such as space, time, work, family, gender and growth shed light on the ambivalent development history of Western capitalist culture. Socio-cultural change in connection with technological developments and the pursuit of economic profit can be read as an ongoing symbolic (re)shaping of the living environment. Diese erste Einführung in die Kultursemiotik stellt Kultur als symbolbasierte Programmatik vor, mit der eine Gesellschaft ihre Lebenswelt (um)gestaltet. Dabei wird deutlich, wie die jeweiligen Zielsetzungen der Weltgestaltung aus dem zweckbestimmten Gebrauch ihrer zentralen Denkfiguren hervorgehen.
