Trying to avoid being labelled as racists, many would say that they do not consider all Muslims to be terrorists, but since the majority would stay silent in the face of terrorism, Huntington’s thesis of a clash of civilizations proved to be right. An analysis of Sunni criticism of Salafism shows a very different picture, though. First, there exists a large corpus of criticism towards Salafism. However, the different groups criticising Salafism are disunited when it comes to the question which kind of Islam should serve as an alternative paradigm to Salafism.
Based on a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Muslim criticism of Salafism, which is being conducted through a discourse analysis of written and audio-visual documents from different Sunni movements, this study empirically proves why theories of a clash of civilizations are not tenable.

Um sich nicht des antimuslimischen Rassismus schuldig zu machen, wird zwar behauptet, es seien natürlich nicht alle Muslime Terroristen, doch befände man sich aufgrund der vermeintlich mangelnden Distanzierung letzten Endes doch im Kulturkampf mit dem Islam als solchem.
Diese Arbeit bietet eine umfassende Analyse zeitgenössischer muslimischer Kritik am Salafismus anhand einer Diskursanalyse schriftlicher und audiovisueller Dokumente verschiedener sunnitischer Strömungen. Es wird aufgezeigt, weshalb Kulturkampftheorien mit Bezug auf die islamische Welt empirisch nicht haltbar sind.
