englischIn the course of media change, the business model of the daily press has been hit by a crisis. The absence of advertising has challenged the financial viability of this form of journalism, which is consistent with and appropriate for a democracy. 16 contributions from the field of media studies analyse these profound structural changes and place the performance of leading forms traditional and digital media under scrutiny. Tensions between commercial interests and social commitment become manifest in all three parts of the book.

The authors analyse the European view on the structural changes as well as the media-entrepreneurial reactions to the media crisis in Switzerland. Further contributions take a closer look at the professional and individual reactions to media change. The inventory of current research not only contributes to the public discourse about the future of a media which is appropriate for a democracy but also opens up new opportunities for a critical debate about the performance of media studies in the course of fundamental change.
