englischWhat are the legal conditions under the GDPR to determine wether data is to be considered personal data, pseudonymous or anonymous? This is currently afflicted with considerable legal uncertainty. Based on the prerequisites of the GDPR and the recent case law of the ECJ this thesis develops an extended relative understanding of the term “personal data” and articulates the legal framework and requirements that form the basis for the legal assessment of the reference of data to a personal or its pseudonymity or anonymity. This thesis elaborates various processing situations and shows the legal scope for their design. The thesis at hand is directed to both parties of academia and practice.
