englischSince 2011, the Middle East has been in a process of open-ended political change. What are the reasons for this reconfiguration and the old authoritarian states’ resilience? This book aims at deconstructing the political and social transformation in the Middle East from an interdisciplinary, comparative perspective. It contains cross-regional as well as longitudinal analyses. On the regional level, it examines the role of international politics, states with hegemonic aspirations and the different trajectories of the ‘Arab uprisings’. The historically orientated studies it includes focus on actors beyond the state order, the role of the media and processes of social self-organisation.
