englischThe conflict between digital ubiquity and territorially bounded copyrights is inherent to all online uses and by that establishes a complex process of collective rights management of online rights of musical works. Since the EU legislator did not succeed in simplifying this complex process in the past, Directive 2014/26/EU aims to proceed the desired transformation of collective licensing: European collecting societies are to grant multinational online licenses. Julia Schafdecker examines the difficulties the EU legislator had to face prior to the adoption of the Directive and if or how the Directive is capable of establishing multi-territorial licensing on the online music market and by that is able to achieve the desired simplification.
