englischThe access to technological knowledge has become a key determinant for international competitiveness affecting developing countries’ opportunities for economic as well as social advancement. At the same time, this access has become heavily restricted by the TRIPs Agreement demanding patent protection for innovations in all fields of technology. The caused adaptation needs are most prevalent in the pharmaceutical sector, where developing countries have traditionally refrained from granting patents due to its extraordinarily high technology intensity and socio-political significance.

The book analyzes the pharmaceutical knowledge generation of India and Brazil. It is shown that the two countries are following two different paths of catching up that can be traced back to varying governance configurations in the innovation systems of both countries.
