How pictures function is analysed by the visual sciences. However, the law, both as a system and a regulatory framework which contrasts the precision of writing with the blurriness of images, remains largely ignored even though it provides a multitude of legal regulations with regard to images. This volume, entitled ‘Image and Law’, undertakes a fundamental survey of this new field of research, and takes a closer look at some of the questions and issues raised. It will therefore be of equal interest to scholars of the visual sciences and to lawyers alike. It is also a fascinating read for all those interested in cultural studies. The author is the head of the Institute for Information Law at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), a Senior Fellow of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg ‘Recht als Kultur’ (Law as Culture) and an expert in the fields of copyright and art law.
