englischThe use of biometric facial recognition by the police is highly controversial. Facial recognition can contribute to the effective combating of crimes, but in some cases it is accompanied by grievous encroachments on fundamental rights. To achieve an appropriate balance in this regard is first and foremost the task of the democratically legitimized legislature. Requirements for this can be found in German Basic Law, the European Convention on Human Rights, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the European data protection law. Against this background, the thesis examines the permissibility of the police use of face recognition in connection with video surveillance to combat crime.

»Die Dissertation überzeugt durch die vielfältigen Perspektiven auf den rechtlich sehr diffizilen Gegenstand biometrischer Videoüberwachung.«
Prof. Dr. Anja Schiemann, KriPoZ 5/2022
