englischThe prohibition of alcohol is one of the defining characteristics of Islamic religious practice. In 2012, the Egyptian legal scholar Saʿduddīn al-Hilālī reopened the discourse on the question of the permissibility of alcohol consumption in Islam, referring to well-known Iraqi legal scholars from the 8th century (including Abū Ḥanīfa). This study takes up his research approach and analyses classical legal works in order to find out which hermeneutical methods were used to legitimise or prohibit the consumption of alcohol and which factors favoured a restrictive change in discourse over the centuries.
