englischThe use of facial recognition in public spaces is highly controversial. In addition to government bodies, non-government bodies are also showing increasing interest in the use of the technology.

The study examines the extent to which individual autonomy is affected by the use of facial recognition sys-tems. The author differentiates between the use for verification, identification, and classification purposes. The dissertation particularly focuses on the protection against interference with autonomy through the use of facial recognition systems by European and national data protection law. It concludes with an outlook on the proposed regulations of the AI Act.

Dr. Hanna Hoffmann is a lawyer at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in the Data Regulation & Cyber group.
