englischCarl Bilfinger was a professor of public law at the universities of Halle, Heidelberg, and Berlin. From 1943 to 1945 and from 1949 to 1954 he was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm/Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law. A companion and follower of Carl Schmitt since 1924, Bilfinger argued for an extensive interpretation of the presidential system of the Weimar Republic, the subsequent dictatorship, and National Socialism. This edition reconstructs Bilfinger's political biography on the basis of a wide range of sources. The published letters, texts, and documents, including a series of articles offering initial interpretations of his work, reveal Bilfinger's close personal and intellectual relationship with Schmitt.
