englischThe secular state’s noblest virtue is restraint; its principle is freedom in and of faith. The increasing importance of Islamic law requires this freedom and its boundaries drawn for the sake of the secularity of the state to be reassessed.

The contributions collected in this volume address selected aspects of this reassessment: Is the headscarf part of public service? Is a handshake a civic duty? What foreign law applies in one's own country? Does the crime of ‘lost honour’ have a mitigating or aggravating effect on punishment? Can there be cooperation without corporation?

The answers to these questions reveal the diversity of the secular constitutional state’s self-understanding in the face of Islamic law.
