englischAustria and Europe are experiencing turbulent times. As part of the internationally renowned series of publications entitled “Politik und Demokratie in den kleineren Ländern Europas” (Politics and Democracy in Europe’s smaller Countries), the new and updated edition of this volume offers a far-reaching overall assessment of Austrian democracy. Inspired by the belief that only international and historical comparisons can result in substantial evaluations, even of individual cases, it analyses and discusses the political institutions and democratic processes in the Second Austrian Republic from a broad comparative perspective.

In addition to the classical subject areas of comparative political science, such as parliamentarianism, federalism, political culture and government activity, the book also devotes significant attention to especially contentious political topics and issues, such as equality and equal rights, inclusion and exclusion as well as Austria’s capacity to enact political reform. The authors who have contributed to this volume are either leading scholars in the field of politics or are experts in its related disciplines from five countries.
