englischGermany is considered a money laundering paradise. The German real estate sector in particular has come under the spotlight. Notaries play a central role in combating money laundering in this sector. However, their role has repeatedly come in for criticism, both politically and in the media. The legislator has reacted to this criticism with various measures, in particular with an expansion of the suspicious activity reporting obligations of notaries. This study provides a comprehensive, scholarly account of the role of notaries in the fight against money laundering. It examines - including comparative law - the new obligations, identifies remaining weaknesses and makes suggestions for improvement.
