englisch154 years after it was founded, where would the SPD place itself in Germany’s political party system and how would it define itself? In the post-‘Agenda 2010’ era (a series of reforms executed by the SPD/Greens coalition, which aimed to reform the German welfare system and labour relations), the SPD is being faced with constant challenges in decision-making processes relating to the content of its policies on important issues. Although new processes and structures within the party have not only facilitated decision-making on the party level but also created greater participation in such processes among its members, it needs to appeal to both its body of core voters and new sections of the electorate as well as to become more distinctive in order to broaden its base of support. Will this enable the SPD to achieve a new majority and thus allow its leader to become German chancellor again? This book depicts the party’s constant search for a direction in identity and policy, analyses current changes in the party’s structure and identifies the challenges it faces in appealing to voters.

Das Buch ist nicht nur Studierenden wärmstens zu empfehlen, sondern gleichermaßen all jenen, die sich mit der deutschen Sozialdemokratie auseinandersetzen möchten.«
