However, the question arises as to what is actually meant by diversity and how it is implemented. This handbook has two goals: Firstly, it aims to provide an overview of theoretical positions on diversity in organisations, linking perspectives from organisational and diversity research. Secondly, it provides concrete insights into the practice of diversity in organisations in a wide range of fields—from business, health, education, social work, politics and security to the media, religion and sports.

Diversität ist zu einem erstrebenswerten Ideal der Spätmoderne geworden. Diesem „Megatrend“ können sich weder Unternehmen noch die Feuerwehr, Universitäten, Gewerkschaften oder Kindertagesstätten entziehen. Es stellt sich allerdings die Frage, was überhaupt unter Diversität verstanden wird und wie es um die Umsetzung steht. Das Handbuch hat zwei Ziele: Erstens vermittelt es einen Überblick über theoretische Positionen zu Diversität in Organisationen und verknüpft dabei Perspektiven der Organisations- und Diversitätsforschung. Zweitens gibt es konkrete Einblicke in die Praxis von Diversität in Organisationen in unterschiedlichsten Feldern – angefangen von der Wirtschaft, über Gesundheit, Bildung, Soziales, Politik, Sicherheit bis hin zu Medien, Religion und Sport.
