englischThis book analyses the EU’s current interpretation of competition and its effects on the implementation of political initiatives in the single market, while sketching out a possible solution based on a new interpretation of competition on the basis of the problems identified in theory and practice. The analysis includes an in-depth overview of the status quo of EU measures designed to support businesses (industrial, cohesion and state aid policies), while also demonstrating examples of complementarity and contradictions from a theoretical and empirical perspective. This shows that certain aspects of the design and implementation of EU measures intended to support businesses undermine the capacity of these measures to achieve their goals in accordance with EU treaties. The empirical part of the analysis focuses on the regional level, making its results particularly interesting for policymakers.
