englischEmotions, such as compassion for the suffering of others or the fear of war and poverty, are omnipresent in international politics. Nevertheless, for a long time reason and not feeling were considered to be the greatest human achievements. However, the most recent groundbreaking findings in the neurosciences call this dictum into question: Emotion and rationality, feeling and reason, do not represent a contradiction but rather condition one another. This leads to fundamental questions that the discipline of international relations (IR) should ask itself: What can emotions contribute to the central research questions and analyses of international politics? Is there a theory of emotion and is it even desirable? How can emotions be captured meth-odologically and empirically?

Emotionen sind in der internationalen Politik allgegenwärtig, wie etwa das Mitgefühl mit dem Leid Anderer oder auch die Furcht vor Krieg und Armut. Dennoch galt lange Zeit der Verstand und nicht Gefühle als höchste Errungenschaft des Menschen. Doch die jüngsten, bahnbrechenden Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaften stellen dieses Diktum in Frage: Emotionen und Rationalität, Gefühl und Verstand, stellen keinen Widerspruch dar, sondern bedingen einander. Dies führt zu grundsätzlichen Fragen, denen sich die Disziplin der Internationalen Beziehungen stellen sollte: Was können Emotionen zu zentralen Fragestellungen und Analysen internationaler Politik beitragen? Gibt es eine Theorie der Emotion und ist dies überhaupt wünschenswert? Wie lassen sich Emotionen methodisch-empirisch erfassen?
