The Asian Crisis has received much attention and has become a major topic for discussion since it erupted in 1997. As a number of ASEAN countries have been directly involved, it is interesting to see how this would impact on economic relationships between the ASEAN countries and Europe.
This volume presents a set of work written with a European perspective. The papers are supplemented by comments from Asian discussants that reflect their perspectives.
For closer ASEAN-EU relations, the crisis has given both sides the opportunity to work, once more, for a long-term perspective beyond the recent turmoil. In conclusion, the work done by the European economists provides an important perspective that helps to promote a better understanding of what the crisis means to the European economy and how that impact could be for the European continent as an absober to the crisis transmission from the Southeast Asian region. The papers are followed and balanced by other views offered by the Asian discussants, who provide interesting comments on the overall subject, and who give both sides the chance to offer pertinent recommendations for further work to improve cooperation between the two regions.
