In this study, this thesis is analysed empirically and innovatively in terms of concept from a sociological point of view. Based on the triangulation of various theoretical approaches, it develops a theory of humane world regions, raising the social profile of the EU and ASEAN to an unprecedented level. It presents the social objectives, social sector and social regulation of each world region from a longitudinal perspective (EU: 1952 to 2010; ASEAN: 1980 to 2010). The foundations of its data are based on world regional legal acts (n = 1620), contracts and annual reports, which are evaluated qualitatively and analytically. The EU is a world region with a binding social profile, while ASEAN has established a non-binding social profile.
Weltregionale Staatenverbünde können als Zwischenstufe zwischen nationaler und globaler Sozialpolitik, als neue Orte für die Generierung sozialer Sicherheit verstanden werden. Wissenssoziologisch wird diese These empirisch wie konzeptionell innovativ sowie differenziert und breit analysiert. Anhand der Triangulation verschiedener theoretischer Erklärungsansätze wird eine Theorie sozialer Weltregionen entwickelt. Empirisch fächert die Arbeit das soziale Profil der EU und der ASEAN in einem bisher noch nicht dagewesenen Ausmaß auf. Es werden die sozialen Ziele, der Sozialsektor und die soziale Steuerung der Weltregionen umfassend im Längsschnitt (EU: 1952 bis 2010; ASEAN: 1980 bis 2010) herausgearbeitet. Die Datengrundlage stützt sich auf weltregionale Rechtsakte (n = 1620), Verträge und Jahresberichte, die qualitativ-inhaltsanalytisch ausgewertet werden. Die EU ist eine Weltregion mit einem verbindlichen sozialen Profil. Die ASEAN hat bisher ein unverbindliches soziales Profil etabliert.
