It is universally perceptible, yet it is not easy to grasp and unravel in theoretical discussion. Based on the extremely sensual and atmospheric films of the American auteur Terrence Malick, this volume shows how the phenomenon of cinematic atmosphere can be specified and translated into an analysis. In doing so, it presents the first examination of Malick's works from the field of film studies with an explicit focus on their atmospheric aesthetic effects. Using interdisciplinary research, the author profoundly fuses approaches from such disciplines as philosophy, aesthetics, emotional and cognitive research, film phenomenology, film narration and film stylistics, and, after critically reflecting on them, applies them effectively in her analyses of specific films.
Die Atmosphäre eines Films ist das, was den Zuschauer über die Bilder hinaus anmutet, ihn in die filmische Welt eintauchen lässt. Sie ist universell spürbar und doch vor allem in der theoretischen Erörterung nicht leicht zu fassen und zu enträtseln. Anhand der äußerst sinnlich-atmosphärischen Filme des US-amerikanischen Autorenfilmers Terrence Malick zeigt dieser Band Wege auf, das Phänomen der filmischen Atmosphäre zu spezifizieren und in eine Analyse zu überführen. Dabei stellt er die erste filmwissenschaftliche Untersuchung der Werke Malicks im expliziten Hinblick auf ihre atmosphärische Wirkungsästhetik dar. Aus einem interdisziplinären Forschungsansatz heraus entwickelt er eine fundierte Zusammenführung sowie eine kritisch reflektierte filmspezifische Übertragung von Ansätzen aus u.a. Philosophie, Ästhetik, Emotions- und Kognitionsforschung sowie Filmphänomenologie, -narratologie und -stilistik, die für die Analyse filmischer Atmosphären fruchtbar gemacht werden können.
