The portrayal of national heroes is minced with sometimes-fabricated details of their private lives such as intrigues and love stories to develop an attractive media product. While e.g. a 30-episode drama on the life of Bismarck is hardly conceivable, we find dozens such TV dramas in China. They play a central role in the dissemination of politically desired images of historical figures.
The treatise uses an interdisciplinary approach to present the “making of” of these TV dramas, i.e. their background and development, as well as stakeholders and institutions of production and regulation. Then detailed case studies and analyses deliver a critique of ideology.
This book is intended not only for experts of Chinese studies, but also for researchers in media studies, political science, economics and law, who want to gain insight in the political relevance of historical topics and the struggle over the prerogative of their interpretation in China’s media.
The author’s research is concentrated on questions of nationalism, identity and social change in East Asia.

Die Darstellung wird dabei mit teils erfundenen Liebschaften, Intrigen und anderen Elementen des Privatlebens gewürzt, um die Figuren marktkonform zu gestalten. Während wir bei uns z.B. eine 30-teilige Serie über Bismarck nicht finden, haben wir dutzende Beispiele in China.
Diese history soaps spielen bei der Verbreitung des politisch erwünschten Images von historischen Figuren eine zentrale Rolle. Die interdisziplinär angelegte Studie veranschaulicht in einer Art „making of“ eingehend Herkunft und Entwicklung des Genres und stellt Institutionen und Akteure vor, welche hinter Produktion und Zensur stehen. Dann folgt ein ideologiekritischer Teil mit Fallstudien und Analysen.
Neben Sinologen ist die Studie somit auch für Medienwissenschaftler, Politologen, Ökonomen und Juristen interessant, die sich über die politische Brisanz historischer Themen und den Kampf um deren Deutungshoheit in den Medien Chinas informieren wollen.
