englischHow can the EU stabilise the continent at its margins? To the degree that EU enlargement policy is shedding options, other EU strategic approaches vis-à-vis the neighbouring regions become more important. In this publication, European Neighbourhood Policy in its particular version towards the East and the Eastern Partnership are also analysed, as are European dealings with upheaval in the Arab world. Several individual items address relationships with Russia and with Turkey. Dealings with Russia and Turkey as well as the European approach to the Black Sea Region are placed in focus. Other articles discuss EU relations with the US as well as relations with newly industrialised countries. In this way, a picture of the European Union as an international player is delineated. In this context it becomes apparent that a gulf exists between expectations and the achieved – and achievable – successes in EU external policy in its neighbouring regions.
